reflective and experimental learning

In this blog I will be reflecting on my own teaching methods and experimenting my learning and experiences within my dance teaching career.

Since the early age of 15 years old I always knew I wanted to be a dancer or dance teacher. I just never know the hard work behind it all. I started with just a small community dance class working on a voluntary basis at a local community centre every Tuesday where I would rush to a afterschool and meet all my friends there at 5pm.
I never knew how to teach infact you can say for the first year I completely “blagged it”. I had no one to teach me teach or tell me the rights and wrongs. This is the best way to learn and experience. “Just do it” the girls would say to me. I use to cringe at the fact I was trying to express the lyrics through movement. Example would be the word “look” using my hand to hide my eyes every time BeyoncĂ© would say the word.  I used this choreographic method every time I would hear new words I would think of ways to incorporate them into a hand gesture or movement. My friends thought I was the best to me I was just doing anything which came to mind. I taught sessions like this every week until one day I taught a full dance routine. To me the experience built up over the year my teaching method and styles became more advanced and I was able to actually teach a class.

I sat for hours watching youtube videos and mimicking my favourite dance choreographers “Brian Friedman” was my favourite. Learning there’s moves from online dance classes and learning choreography from PlayStation games like “just dance”. I felt I was getting better and knew this was something I would love to do professionally. This was the beginning of my teaching journey and years later I began to teach as a full time job whilst training and travelling within the dance community.

My experience is too be continued...

communicating your ideas Sunday 17th November 2019

Unfortunately I had to miss this Skype call but thankfully my classmate filled me in on the dicussion and from what it seems there were many conversions between voice and communication. My classmate had said the call was directed to finding your own voice in different mediums and example of this would be ‘your writing voice’.  I wanted to speak more on communication within an inclusive dance class. For me this is something I sometimes find difficult within my own professional practice. Although I have previously wrote a blog on my communication with disabled dancers I feel like my knowledge has developed and my critical thinking and analyses has improved.  Finding my voice to me is challenging when working with all ages and abilities and this is something I have been challenged with on a day to day basis. A teachers voice is so important within a classroom but how is your voice acknowledged to someone who has an hearing impairment ?  Last week Monday, I taught an open dan...

my daily practise

What excites me in my daily practise ? What do I admire ? What gets me enthusiastic? What makes me angry or sad ? What do I love about teaching ? What don’t I understand ? Like John Dewey I have been thinking about ways to talk about my experience and what having an experience means to me. I have used deweys term of reflective writing to start this essay and throughout will be comparing my reflection on teaching and my reflective thoughts with resources and researchers such as Kurt Lewin, David Kolb, and J Moon to name a few.  Like Dewey I believe reflective thinking is “careful consideration”. “Active, persistent, and careful consideration of any belief or supposes form of knowledge in the light of the grounds that support it and the further conclusions to which it tends” (Dewey, 1993). Like Kolb I believe I learn when involved in having a “concrete experience” Kolb describe this as ‘doing something’ which helps me recognise knowledge and experience more. I’ve always been a very sl...

journal writing experience

This blog will be a start to my journal writing experience. I’ve never written any of my experiences down before so this will be amazing to look back over in the next few months. It’s all valuable experience within my professional Practice course. I have choosen to write about an event I worked at over the summer. The event was for Newham council. My role was to promote my dance classes, hand out leaflets, interact with members of the public and get them involved in dance games and different activities. In this blog I would like to reflect on my day beginning with my how I felt about the event and what I was expecting from the event  Key facts to think about: Initial reflection  Mood  Unexpected happenings My thoughts  My feelings Evaluation: What went well What worked  What did I learn What if ? Another view: writing about the event from another perspective
